Barney McAll – Biography
Barney McAll stands as one of Australia’s most visionary and uncompromising musical voices – a GRAMMY-nominated, ARIA-winning pianist, composer, and producer whose work defies categorization. He has released 28 acclaimed solo albums, performed on over 100 recordings, and collaborated with Sia, Daniel Merriweather and jazz legends including Gary Bartz, Dewey Redman, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Cobb, Billy Harper and Roy Ayers. Yet McAll’s significance extends far beyond his technical mastery; he is equally revered as a mentor and author, challenging the commodification of creativity.
Born in Melbourne, McAll’s musical DNA formed through early immersion in jazz and blues records at family gatherings. His professional journey began at the Victorian College of the Arts under Paul Grabowsky and Mike Nock, before relocating to New York in the 1990s a pivotal era that saw him co-found the seminal Groove Collective while developing his singular voice at storied venues like the Village Vanguard.
McAll’s catalogue spans spiritual jazz (Mother of Dreams and Secrets, inspired by Cuban study), dystopian pop-jazz ( Global Intimacy under his TQX alias), and the ARIA-winning Mooroolbark (2015). His 2022 masterpiece Precious Energy – featuring Hiatus members and Gary Bartz – was hailed as “world-class” (Rolling Stone) and “like drowning in honey” (Music Trust), exemplifying his ability to bridge avant-garde experimentation with visceral joy.
Adventurous, innovative, super creative and just downright enthralling (and often breathtaking) listen from one of our finest musicians and a superb musical assemblage of talents. -Stuart Coupe
– As Art Music Awards curator (2019-2023), he elevated experimental and underrepresented voices
– His Federation Bells commission Trilogy of Cycles fused improvising quintet with public sound art
– As APRA AMCOS Ambassador, he advocates for artist rights in the digital economy
Since returning to Australia in 2016, McAll has dedicated himself to nurturing new generations through:
– Lectureships at VCA and Monash University (2016-present)
– Mentorship programs (Australian Art Orchestra, Freedman Fellowship, SIMA)
– 140+ Patreon masterclasses dissecting jazz lineage and creative process
– Three boundary-pushing books:
– 365 Music Maxims (hand-printed manifesto against digital disposability)
– Singingness: You Are What You Hear (transformative audiation method)
– Autobiography As The Flow Cries
“McAll casts spells at the piano that bend reality itself. -Sydney Morning Herald

“Barney is one of my favorite pianists, that’s why he’s been in my band for the last 20 years”
-GARY BARTZ
Barney is a special piano player with that certain heart and touch, so he has great possibilities.
He’s a genuine musician, not just a skilled artist. There’s a certain touch that I’m talking about.
It’s hard to explain, but he has that
-BILLY HARPER
There was a virtual absence of familiar bop riffs, extended bop harmonies or precise
bop rhythms. Instead, Rosenwinkel’s pieces offered turbulent, thickly textured waves of
sound, mostly produced by Barney McAll’s impassioned keyboard work.
-LOS ANGELES TIMES
Using space and simplicity, Barney McAll conjures mighty music.
-ALL ABOUT JAZZ
McAll manages to intelligently integrate pop elements into his music and deserves
much wider attention.
-LOS ANGELES TIMES
McAll displays an immediate feel for each pattern and the stamina to sustain them
without sounding automatic. McAll also contributed some of the most successful solos,
playfully blending his parts of the arrangements with bleeding voicings and darting accents”
-THE BOSTON GLOBE
“(McAll’s) ability to craft memorable themes is matched by a feel for the atmospheric…
Now established on the intensely competitive New York jazz scene, he plays here with
some of the city’s leading musicians. His music is utterly contemporary, McAll demonstrating
throughout that he is a talented composer as well as gifted keyboardist”
-ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE
The revelation of the evening is pianist Barney McAll. Playing beneath the liquid passages
of (Dewey) Redman, McAll carefully kneaded clusters of notes from his hands that I found
devastating. He explored ideas with a dramatic flourish that had the audience in raptures”
-DRUM MEDIA

-DRUM MEDIA
